Fort Dodge man shot, killed
No arrests made Sunday
A Fort Dodge man was shot and killed early Sunday morning in the Pleasant Valley area, according to Fort Dodge Police Capt. Ryan Gruenberg.
Shane Wessels, 32, was found unresponsive in the roadway at the intersection of 10th Avenue Southwest and 10th Street Southwest sometime after 3:30 a.m., Gruenberg reported.
Wessels was transported to UnityPoint Health — Trinity Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
No arrests were made in connection with the murder as of Sunday night.
Mia Mosley lives in a house just across the road from where the shooting took place, along 10th Avenue Southwest.
She said Wessels was gunned down after a fight allegedly broke out near the Mini Park.
Wessels and others would often hang out after the bars closed, she said.
Mosley said she didn’t know why the fight started.
“It’s just sad,” she said. “Everybody was just out here chillin’.”
She said a group of people, both men and women, began physically fighting in the street sometime after 3 a.m.
At one point, Wessels tried walking away, she said.
“He was walking away, and they kept running up on him,” Mosley said. “He was walking away. That was the main thing.”
“It was so fast,” she said.
Police received reports of shots being fired in the 900 block of 10th Avenue Southwest at 3:31 a.m.
The initial investigation indicates there was an altercation between individuals before the shooting, Gruenberg confirmed.
A homicide investigation is under way, and Gruenberg said the Fort Dodge Police Department and Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation are investigating.
The Fort Dodge Police Department had the scene secured throughout the day.
Special agents with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation were on scene for several hours Sunday morning, while evidence technicians examined the area.
The Iowa State Patrol also assisted and took measurements at the scene.
