Five candidates are competing in the Fort Dodge City Council primary Tuesday.
Voters across Fort Dodge will go to the polls on Tuesday to whittle down the number of candidates seeking two at-large seats on the City Council.
There are five candidates in the race. The top four vote-getters in Tuesday’s primary election will advance to the Nov. 7 general election.
The polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
The candidates are Councilman Andy Fritz, Councilman Jeff Halter, Richard Higgins, Eugene Newsome and Lydia Schuur.
Fritz, of 1222 S. 25th St., has been a member of the council since 2010. He is seeking his third term.
The councilman is a human resources generalist for CJ Bio America. He is a graduate of St. Edmond High School who earned an associate degree from Iowa Central Community College.
Halter, of 1446 S. 21st St., has been a councilman since 2014. He is seeking his second term.
Halter is a special education teacher in the Fort Dodge Community School District’s PRIDE program. He has a master’s degree in special education from the University of Phoenix and a bachelor’s degree from Wartburg College in Waverly.
Higgins lives at 3343 10th Ave. N. He is a graduate of Fort Dodge Senior High. He is retired, although he works part-time.
Newsome, of 18 N. Third St., is also retired. He has an associate degree from Iowa Central Community College and is a graduate of Carver Senior High School in Columbus, Georgia.
Schuur, of 602 N. 21st St., is the outreach coordinator for the Community Health Center of Fort Dodge. She is a graduate of St. Edmond High School who earned an associate degree from Iowa Central Community College and a bachelor’s degree from Buena Vista University.
At-large members of the City Council serve four-year terms. Councilmembers are paid $4,800 per year.
