Building for the future

July 6, 2008

FONDA — Although Staff Sergeant Bruce Pollema was en route to Fort Sill, Okla., for mobilization processing in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2004, he never arrived at his destination. On Aug. 27, the 30-year-old northwest Iowa native assigned to the Iowa Army National Guard’s 2168th Transportation Company was killed when the military tractor-trailer he was traveling in rolled over into a ditch near Camp Dodge in Johnston. As she had done countless times before for other fallen military personnel, Betty Nielsen of Fonda, and her team of volunteers, created a personalized Freedom Quilt to honor Pollema, who had served for two years in the U.S. Navy and in the Iowa National Guard for 10 years. For Bruce’s parents, Wilmar and Betty Pollema of Hull, the gift continues to comfort the family. ‘‘It’s beyond words,’’ said Betty Pollema, who attended the recent open house at Freedom Quilts’ new building on the Pocahontas County farm of Dennis and Betty Nielsen.
