Mustangs go back-to-back
CEDAR FALLS — Good fortune proved to be on the side of Bryan Case and the Southern Cal football team once again here Friday. In an eerily similar finish to last year’s title game, the third-ranked Mustangs (13-1 overall) needed another overtime and more flair for the dramatic to post a magical 28-27 Class A state championship triumph over No. 8 Mason City Newman (12-2) at the UNI-Dome. Quarterback Greg Meyer’s heroic two-point conversion run in the extra frame secured the win for Southern Cal. Meyer, a senior, also delivered the decisive points in the 2008 finals victory over North Tama (22-21). “Things never came easy, but our kids have so much perseverance and just kept plugging away,” Case said. “This shows anything’s possible if you believe. “God is good.” With the nail-biting win, the Mustangs captured their fourth state crown in school history.
