Tritons score 24 runs
MASON CITY — MASON CITY — Rick Pederson has seen a lot of baseball games decided in a lot of different ways, and after Sunday’s regional contest, he can add another one to that list.
Down to their final strike in the bottom of the ninth, trailing by one run, it was Ryan Durant who provided the heroics and sent the Triton bench into a frenzy.
Durant delivered a three run walk-off home run with two outs to catapult the Tritons into the semifinal round of the region XI tournament with a shocking 24-22 victory over Southeastern.
‘‘It was a roller coaster ride,’’ said Iowa Central head coach Rick Pederson. ‘‘The wind was blowing straight out and our pitchers said it was like trying to throw into a brick wall.’’
The Tritons (35-17) will now face top-seed DMACC at 11 a.m. today in Mason City.
Win or lose, the Tritons will face Ellsworth at 2 p.m. If the Tritons win twice in a row today, they’ll be crowned regional champions.
