Fort Dodge YWCA is a beacon of hope
As we move into May we begin thinking about milestones — goals made and goals met. Graduation is one such rite of passage. Families and friends acknowledge the achievement, and for a glorious day we come together to celebrate success.
For the women living at the YWCA, ‘‘graduation’’ is the day they can move into their own home. It’s the culmination of really hard work, intense soul searching and a good deal of independent study. For many, graduation is actually the completion of a ‘‘life re-make.’’ It takes a long time to unlearn the experiences of failure. In the past, experience had told these women when they mess up, they would lose the support of their mentors, the custody of their children, the love of their families and the freedom to make choices for their lives. Only we can teach them otherwise.
It’s hard to believe that it’s been more than 20 years since the focus of the YWCA changed.
