July 6, 1998 NEWS: Jessica Erickson spent time after she graduated from Wartburg College volunteering in Israel to help teach children with vision problems and blindness for the Helen Keller School for Blind Children. SPORTS: St. Edmond Gaels rode a two-hit, seven-strikeout performance by Brian Mann and the offense capitalized on eight walks to shut out Algona 5-1 in a North Central Conference baseball game. July 6, 1983 NEWS: The Algona High School Scarlet Regiment Marching Band received a first- place Liberty Bell award at the Philadelphia competition July 3 in the division for bands with less than 100 members. SPORTS: St. Edmond scored three runs in the top of the first inning then rode the two-hit pitching of Dave Konvalinka for a 3-0 win over Jefferson in a fast-moving Midwest Conference baseball game.
