Shocked it was that close. Still a sad testament for this city and future progress in my opinion.

At least the voter turnout was upgraded from embarrassing to pathetic.

Hey Brent, check FD's property tax rates vs. the rest of the state's towns our size and bigger and get back to us. Thanks.

Here, I've done the leg work for you. 2011 property tax rates in Iowa (per $1,000 of value): 1) Ottumwa and Keokuk $46, 3) Des Moines and Council Bluffs $45, 5) Ankeny, Sioux City and Fort Dodge $44, 8) Waterloo $42, 9) Marshalltown $41, 10) Davenport and Iowa City $40. Many smaller towns are in the $48-49 range. So are Fort Dodge's rates that unreasonable by comparison?

Now with that being said, keep this in mind: Median home prices in 2009 for towns relative to Fort Dodge's size in Iowa: Ames $168,729; Cedar Falls $159,794; Waterloo $107,900; Mason City $102,404; Muscatine $102,931; Marshalltown $97,347; Sioux City $92,500. Fort Dodge? $85,021. The only city lower is Ottumwa at $71,129, which also has higher property tax rates. In other words, you have to look at the overall numbers -- how much a city can draw off a home valued at, say, a $100,000 median vs. an $85,000 median -- before you complain about our rates. Rates tend to be higher here and in Ottumwa because home prices are lower. You can't have both.
