i worked graveyard shift there, the don at the time wld come in drunk at 4 in the morn w other staff members, or high. i did report it, was fired for "being pregnant", and so on. the state was well aware of the situation. they also reprimanded me for reporting skin tears, and other observations, since higher ups didnt want to deal with it, lots of paperwork you was an awful place. plus, i was an outsider since i didnt partake in their pasttime. it ruined me for working at a care center ever again.

So no one misunderstands, my reference is more to the state of the physical plant, not the level of care; I never heard any charges of drug use by staff, but I can't imagine it never happened with some individuals given the pervasiveness of drug use in the baby boom generation and those younger. As for decline of Iowa's rural communities generally, look to the legislature and Iowa's INSANE tax code and property tax evaluations. which is why small town business have mostly gone under and both businesses and retired individuals leave for FL, TX and SD and other more favorable climes. On top pf that were the effects of the railway union's wage scales and work rules and our country's very earliest govt regulation of private industry. Worse come to come, folks!

mistermom 1. Several years ago I remember an article in this paper about how the Gowrie nursing had two perfect state inspections in a row. 2. If you knew of drug use that was affecting patient care why not report it you are just as guilty of abuse as the abuser.

Gowrie Care Center is a great place!! Yes it may have it down side but every care center does. I just wish the community would get more in to helping the center care out intend of being negative. Without some of the new head people the care center would of shut it door a couple years ago. Its time for small community to join together and work together. Just a couple weeks ago the eye clinic is on open one day a :( What doing to close next if we don't keep the business we have open!

What would one expect but a series of owners milking another loosely administered govt program, in this case Title 19. A member of my family was once one of never more than 4 or 5 PRIVATE patients in its then 54 beds while the GOVT paid for the others, no small part of whom had conveniently passed on substantial estates to heirs a few years before.

i worked there several years ago, and wondered on a daily basis how in the world it wasnt shut down and deemed a hellhole. i hope you can turn it around and make it a place that people would actually feel comfortable placing their family members there. you have your work cut out for you. good luck to you! also, get all of your staff drug tested, it wasnt mandatory when i worked there, but from the way things were done, it shouldve been. just some fyi. it could turn out to be a wonderful home!
