''This is a great tournament,'' said Fort Dodge head coach Bobby Thompson. "You get to see some of the teams you don't get to see much during the season. Ballard has 10 ranked individuals and they're extremely tough.
''Oskaloosa, Algona, Ankeny and Emmetsburg has a lot of tradition. You throw in Eagle Grove, who always puts on a strong tournament - it's a good way to start the season.
The Dodgers are coming off a disappointing 48-30 loss to Ankeny on Thursday, will be depleted with only eight or nine guys in the lineup, are looking to work on individual showings.
''It'll be tough to win this thing with eight or nine guys, especially with Ballard,'' Thompson said. ''Our goal is to get our nine guys in the top four and get as many guys in the finals that we can.''
The Dodgers are hoping to get some solid points out of ranked seniors Keaton Lunn (4th at 140), Cody Marsh (9th at 145), Nate Halverson (No. 3 at 152), Trevor Cook (No. 9 at 160) and Tyler Wingerson (No. 4 at 189). Also ranked is junior Monty Arends (No. 8 at 112).
"This tournament is good for us to judge where we are at,'' Thompson said. "It helps us to see what we need to work on.''
With 10 ranked wrestlers, the Bombers bring a potent attack that puts them as one of the elite teams in the state of Iowa.
Ballard's three top-ranked wrestlers, Tanner Weatherman (135), Trent Weatherman (152) and Brock Watherman (171) have the Bombers seeking another state championship this season.
They also bring three second-ranked wrestlers in Tyler Grask (125), Tanner Hiatt (140) and T.J. Hiatt (160).
''Ballard and Ankeny are probably the top two teams,'' said Eagle Grove head coach Dave Morgan. "Ballard is one of the best teams in the state. They're just a level above everybody else.''
Morgan is just hoping his guys can go out and wrestle to the best of their abilities.
''We really don't gauge much on this tournament,'' Morgan said. "We just want to get better through out the course of the year. It's good to go out and get hammered on the mat, everybody needs that to build on as they go.''
Emmetsburg enters the field with rated wrestlers Jordan Cody (No. 6 at 135), Joey Naig (No. 4 at 152), Jake Morris (No. 5 at 189) and Adam Leuer (No. 8 at 215).
Ranked wrestlers for Algona are Landon Ludwig (No. 5 at 160) and Nick Larson (No. 5 at 171)
