Messenger scholarship winners announced

The Messenger has named its five recipients for scholarships to Iowa Central Community College for the 2009-2010 academic year. The newspaper pays full tuition for the first year of study, and the college provides half-tuition scholarships for the second year.

Recipients were evaluated in academic achievement, leadership and community involvement.

Each recipient has a strong academic record below is a sampling of some of their honors and achievements.

Seth Hugghins is a student at Fort Dodge Senior High School. He has been involved in basketball, tennis and the school newspaper. Hugghins is a member of First Presbyterian Church and has participated in Sunday school and youth activities. He also volunteers at the Humane Society of North Central Iowa. He is a former Messenger carrier.

Brady Johnson, a Fort Dodge Senior High senior, is involved in golf and the school newspaper.

He has been selected to attend the National Journalism Convention in St. Louis, Mo., attended the 2008 summer Newspaper Journalism workshop in Iowa City, is a four-time recipient of the Central Iowa Metro League Academic Award, a member of the National Honor Society and took first place at the local and district level of the Veterans of Foreign Wars'Voice of Democracy essay contest. He is employed as a sports writer for The Messenger?

Joseph Flattery, a senior at St. Edmond High School is active in choir, chamber choir, musical, track, basketball, football and baseball. He has been a class officer, basketball team captain, a member of the National Honor Society and has received numerous all conference and all-state athletic awards. He has been a Messenger carrier since 2004.

Patrick Flattery, a St. Edmond High School senior, participates in football, track, baseball, basketball, French Club, musical, chorus, chamber choir and Respect for Life. He has been a member of the student council and a class officer. Flattery has also been on the gold and silver honor rolls, was a prom king candidate and is a two year recipient of the Monsignor Kelly Award for excellence in athletics and music. He has been a Messenger carrier since 2002.

Jonathan Flattery, a senior at St. Edmond High School, is active in football, basketball, track, baseball, National Honor Society, concert chorus, French Club and the National Council on Youth Leadership. He served as junior varsity captain of the football and basketball teams and as varsity captain of the baseball team, on which has has been first team all district. He has been a Messenger carrier since 2001.
