Most of us are aware of the continuing rise in the incidence of being overweight or obese in our society. It is known that obesity is the culprit of many chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and some forms of cancer. According to the World Health Organization, overweight and obesity is the second leading cause of preventable death in our country, second to tobacco use or smoking. In an effort to fight this epidemic and to improve our community's health, Trinity Regional Medical Center's Healthy Living Department will be offering a new weight loss/weight maintenance program called Healthy Weight 4 Life. The goal of this program is to create a healthy community by giving health information, motivation and increased momentum toward reaching individuals goals through group participation. This program is not just another "weight loss" program, but could be better described as an "improvement in lifestyle habits" program. By improving lifestyle, weight loss often occurs.
The program consists of monthly group classes which will be held at Trinity Regional Medical Center on the first Wednesday of every month beginning Aug. 4. During the month of July, individual appointments are being taken to obtain pre-program body measurements and to establish individual goals. Taking body measurements before, during and after programming is an excellent way to keep track of your changing shape as you become more fit and this data can be a great source of motivation. Body weight by itself is not a good indicator of improved fitness. This is because when you burn fat and increase your muscle mass, you may weigh a bit more even though your body is getting tighter and smaller. This is due to the high density of muscle tissue compared to fat. Participants will also have the opportunity to check their progress between monthly educational classes.
The Healthy Weight 4 Life program differs from other weight loss/weight maintenance programs. This program is designed for 12 months, but participants may continue in the program for as long as they desire and may join at any time. This program does not teach any type of fad diet, but concentrates on developing healthy lifestyle habits centered on the concept of caloric intake versus caloric expenditure.
Class topics will include:
The Magic of Weight Loss
Setting Personal Goals
What Should I Eat
Creating a Healthy Environment
Fill Up, Not Out
How not to "blow it" on vacation
Don't Miss Your Cues
We hope participants will find this program to be fun, effective and motivational. To enroll in the program please contact Trinity Healthy Living at 574-6187. The program is for individuals age 18 and older and the cost of the program is $20 per month.
It is important to remember that there are no guarantees to produce and maintain weight loss. Success is possible only with maximum cooperation, desire and commitment to behavioral change. Behavior change takes time and effort, but by creating a healthy lifestyle, and through the support of others, together we can obtain a healthy weight.
