The Messenger has named its three Iowa Central Community College scholarship winners for the 2011-2012 academic year. The newspaper pays full tuition for the first year of study and the college pays half-tuition scholarships for the second year.
Recipients were evaluated in academic achievement, leadership and community involvement. Following is a sampling of their honors and achievements.
Anthony Flattery is a senior attending St. Edmond High School. He has been involved in baseball, football, basketball, band, jazz band and choir. He has been on his school's gold honor roll for all four years of high school and was a Wendy's High School Heisman State Finalist, having lettered in four sports. He plans to major in mathematics.
Benjamin Bethke is a senior at St. Edmond High School. He has been involved in basketball, 4-H, and various activities at St. Paul Lutheran Church. He has been on his school's honor roll, was recognized as a Student in the Arts two times and has participated in the North Central Conference Art Show. He plans to major in biology and herpetology.
Jonathan Cygan is a senior at Fort Dodge Senior High. He has been involved in cross country, swimming, tennis, band, orchestra, debate and the National Council on Youth Leadership. He has been on his school's honor roll for all four years of high school and is a member of the National Honor Society. He plans to major in mathematics.
