Ensembles from the Algona High School Music Department attended the State Large Group Festival in Forest City on May 6. The Concert Choir was awarded a Division I rating, the Concert Band was awarded a Division II rating, and the Mixed Chorus performed for Comments Only.

A team of three adjudicators provided by the Iowa High School Music Association evaluated the three AHS ensembles' performances. They rated the ensembles on the following criterion: tone quality, intonation, rhythm, balance and blend, technique, interpretation and musicianship, diction/articulation and appropriate literature. The independent evaluation aspect of the State Large Group Music Festival is the major element that Iowa High Schools' bands and choirs use to determine the quality of their music ensembles' performance level.

The Concert Choir performed "Hark I Hear the Harps Eternal," arranged by Alice Parker, and "Prayer of the Children" by Kurt Bestor. The Concert Band performed "Solas Ane," by Samuel Hazo, and "Play!" by Carl Holmquist. The Mixed Chorus performed "A Jubilant Gloria," by Mary Lynn Lightfoot, and "Bound for Jubilee," by Joyce Eilers.
