Quentin Hill, of Eagle Grove, is one of 10 recipients of a 2011 Matthew Shepard Scholarship. Hill's scholarship is one of three Gold Matthew Shepard Scholarships worth up to $40,000. The scholarship, through the Eychaner Foundation, is presented to openly lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender high school students.
According to an Eychaner release, Hill created the Eagle Grove Gay-Straight Alliance "with the task of creating a safe zone for LGBT and Straight Allied students." Though the GSA, Hill worked to reduce the use of homophobic slurs in classrooms and school hallways, and fought usage of the phrase, "That's so gay."
Hill was also a leader in Student Council, the Spanish Club, and cross country. He has lobbied local and national leaders on immigration issues, and volunteered for One Iowa, Planned Parenthood and political campaigns.
Hill plans to attend the University of Iowa. The scholarships will be awarded at a dinner July 3 at the Hy-Vee Conference Center in West Des Moines.
