The 18th annual Hy-Vee Community Kids Fest, an opportunity for students to earn money for their schools, will be Sept. 20 at the Crossroads Mall. Each student in kindergarten through fourth grade from the Fort Dodge Community Schools, St. Edmond Catholic Schools, Community Christian, St. Paul Lutheran, Prairie Valley, Southeast Webster Grand, Manson Northwest Webster and Rockwell City/Lytton Schools will be invited to participate and compete for their school.

The students will participate for points in each of the games set up at the booths. Parental supervision is required, and parents are also invited to join in and earn additional points.

The schools will be separated into categories, based on the number of students in their school. Top schools with the highest attendance and the greatest number of points will receive the most money . They will be competing to earn their share of more than $10,000.

Each school will receive a minimum of $500 for participation. The Fort Dodge Public Library will receive $500 to purchase books and materials for its children's department.

This year, the theme is "Giving Back for our Future." Organizers of the event this year thought it would be beneficial to share ways in which youths and families can get involved to make our community better for the future.

"It will be fun to see what kinds of projects the students would like to volunteer their time at to make our Fort Dodge community stronger," said Ann Halbur, marketing and events coordinator for Hy-Vee.
