Iowa Central honors Hodges, alumni

Iowa Central Community College is having its yearly Coming Home Alumni and Friends Weekend Saturday and Sunday.

While a celebratory week for its students at the start of the year and its first home football game, the homecoming weekend is also a chance for the college to honor its former students from long ago.

"This is a big event for alumni," Laurie Hendricks, vice president of development and alumni relations, said.

Iowa Central's alumni will be coming from across the country to participate in the event starting Saturday. Following a tour of the campus, there will be a banquet, Hendricks said.

"We want to bring them up to speed with what's happening on campus," she said.

Proceeds from silent and live auctions that day will go toward the college's scholarships. Items this year include a Dell desktop computer, a St. Edmond scholarship, and a Willow Ridge Golf Membership.

Last year, more than $20,000 was raised for scholarships, Hendricks said.

"As enrollment goes up, our need for scholarships goes up," she said.

The main event of the evening will take place at 8:45 p.m. Saturday, with the induction of Hall of Fame members for the class of 2011. There are 11 of them: five athletes and five distinguished alumni, as well as one humanitarian award.

The recipient of the humanitarian award this year will be Dr. John Hodges, a former 39-year member of the college's board of trustees and "a familiar face on campus." The award honors his commitment to Iowa Central, Hendricks said.

The public is welcome to the ceremony, Hendricks said.

"You don't have to be an alumni," she said. "We want everyone to come out and enjoy what we have to offer."

Sunday, there will be a tailgate party at Dodger Stadium at 10 a.m., leading up to the Iowa Central Triton vs. Grand Rapids football game at 11 a.m.

In addition to the alumni recognition and Hall of Fame induction, there will be a week's worth of events and activities for the college's current students beginning today, including a bonfire and fireworks at 8 p.m. Tuesday, a dance at 8:30 p.m. Thursday, and a pep rally at noon Friday.
