NEWELL - An incredible individual effort by Mitch Bonnstetter lifted the sixth-ranked (8-man) West Bend-Mallard football team to a 44-26 victory over No. 8 Newell-Fonda Monday night.
The Wolverines (10-1 overall) will get a rematch with district rival and two-time defending state champion Armstrong-Ringsted at home Friday night. The Mustangs defeated Remsen-Union 24-0 last night.
Bonnstetter ran for 338 yards on 31 carries, scoring six touchdowns along the way for West Bend-Mallard. The Wolverines have won four Class A state titles and are now 37-15 in the postseason.
Bonnstetter's TD runs came from 57, 9, 5, 56, 40 and 29 yards out.
Brady Bohe led Newell-Fonda (9-2) with 158 yards rushing and a score. N-F was held 30 points below its season average of nearly 56 points a game.
Last year, the Mustangs defeated West Bend-Mallard in the first round of the playoffs.
Newell-Fonda was ousted by Armstrong-Ringsted in the next round, however, and A-R went on to defend its state crown.
Earlier in the year, Armstrong-Ringsted defeated the Wolverines, 41-18, at home.
