Girl Scout Cookies have been a part of American culture for longer than most of us have been around - more than 75 years.

Get your taste buds ready; they're back. It's the time of year when those scrumptious treats are being sold across the land by the Girl Scouts of the USA.

Cookie sales locally are also once again under way.

The Girl Scout Cookie Program helps girls realize their potential as they grow into strong, effective women. The Scouts who participate learn important skills such as setting goals, money management and teamwork. It's not unusual to find successful businesswomen who first learned about planning, decision-making and customer service as Scouts. Whatever the future holds for today's Girl Scouts, their experience in Scouting helps them succeed more easily.

The Girl Scout Cookie Program is a way for girls to learn about business ethics, customer service, marketing and advertising. It helps build leadership skills that will be of benefit for a lifetime.

Some of the money raised by the cookie sales remains in the local area and helps support Girl Scouts' many important programs.

Help out by saying ''yes'' when these ambitious young folks ask you to purchase cookies.

When you do, you're helping make the nation stronger.

And, as if you didn't already know, the cookies taste great.
