2012 offers new seed varieties

Goss’ wilt resistance, wider maturity ranges for this region

A pair of Iowa-based seed companies -?Pioneer and Stine Seed Co. - are touting stronger-than-ever corn varieties and offerings for the upcoming 2012 growing season.

Mitch Montgomery, area agronomist in north central Iowa for Pioneer Hi-Bred, said they have advanced 13 new corn hybrids with six of them filling a large void in maturity availability that has been seen the last couple of years.

According to Montgomery, six of the 13 new corn hybrids available are classified in the 108- to 113-day maturity.

"This is a spot where the industry has been short in the past and we are excited to be filling in where the industry has been lacking," Montgomery said.

These choices included the new Optimum AcreMax and Optimum AcreMax Xtra Insect protection.

Pioneer received approval last August on the two products. Optimum AcreMax, according to the company, marks the industry's first U.S. approval of a single-bag integrated refuge product that targets only above-ground insects.

Both Optimum AcreMax and Optimum AcreMax Xtra products integrate all of a Corn Belt grower's refuge needs into a single bag, the company claims.

The line of simplified refuge products available from Pioneer includes the Optimum AcreMax 1 insect production, which is an integrated corn rootworm refuge solution; Optimum AcreMax RW rootworm protection, an integrated single-bag refuge solution for corn rootworm; Optimum AcreMax insect protection, a single-bag integrated refuge product targeting only above-ground insects; and Optimum AcreMax Xtra insect protection, a single-bag refuge product targeting above- and below-ground insects.

"We are bringing forward the new AcreMax Xtra products, with integrated refuge in a bag," said Montgomery. "With the refuge mixed in seed bags, there is no need for a separate form of controlling rootworm."

Montgomery said Pioneer is in a very good position when it comes to supply.

"We have a good wide range of 96- to 113-CRM available," said Montgomery.

Goss' wilt affected many Iowa corn growers last year, and, Montgomery said, Pioneer continues to be a leader in Goss' wilt research.

"We have strong lineups in early- to late-maturity that feature Goss' wilt resistance," he said.

Stine Seed Co.

Stine's 2012 corn line-up, according to the company, includes Agrisure 3000GT, Agrisure GT/CB/LL, Genuity Yieldgard VT Triple Pro, Herculex I, Roundup Ready 2 and Yieldgard VT Triple traits, as well as conventional corn.

David Thompson, national marketing and sales director for Stine, said some of the new offerings from Stine include the Stine 9311VT3PRO brand. This, he said, is a new 91- to 93-day Genuity VT Triple PRO hybrid that features dual mode-of-action, above-ground insect protection, stacked with below-ground insect protection and Roundup Ready 2 technology.

"It features very good stalks and stress tolerance, coupled with fast dry down," said Thompson. "It is highly adaptable to a wide variety of soil types for consistent yields."

The Stine 9420VT3PRO brand is a new 99- to 100-day Genuity VT Triple PRO hybrid featuring dual mode-of-action, above-ground insect protection stacked with below-ground insect product and Roundup Ready 2 technology.

"It features very good roots and stalks and excellent stress tolerance and responds well to fungicide and adapts to a variety of soil types," Thompson said.

Stine's 9529VT3PRO brand is a new 106- to 107-day Genuity VT Triple PRO hybrid with the same features as the previous hybrids.

"It features excellent roots and stalks," Thompson said, "also outstanding yield performance and responds especially well to fungicide application."

For 108- to 110-day maturity, Stine is offering the 9629GTCBLL brand. This hybrid combines glyphosate and glufosinate herbicide tolerance with in-plant corn borer resistance.

"There's extreme yield potential," said Thompson.

In the 109- to 110-day range, Stine is offering 9728EVT3PRO Genuity VT Triple PRO hybrid featuring dual mode-of-action, above-ground insect protection stacked with below-ground insect protection and Roundup Ready 2 technology.

"This hybrid features new Stine genetics with excellent stalks and roots, rapid dry down and good test weight," said Thompson. "This is also a very high-yielding, fuller season corn, and works well in corn-on-corn situations."

Finally, Thompson said, the 9732VT3PRO variety is a new 110- to 111-day Genuity VT Triple PRO hybrid also featuring the dual mode-of-action, above-ground insect protection stacked with below-ground insect protection and Roundup Ready 2 technology.

"This also features new Stine genetics with excellent stalks and root and great yield-to-moisture ratio," said Thompson.
