Wolverines win in Gowrie

April 3, 2012
By JOSH MEYER Messenger Sports Writer

GOWRIE - All early indications point to a promising season for the West Bend-Mallard girls track team.

Showing no signs of early rust, the Wolverines opened their 2012 outdoor campaign with a bang by earning their second consecutive Richard Ryan Relays Class A title.

The Wolverines prevailed in 11 events and accumulated 150 points on the night. Host Prairie Valley (125), Pocahontas Area/Pomeroy-Palmer (97) and Southeast Webster-Grand (70) each followed.

"For the first time out, I thought we ran real well," WB-M head coach Eldon McKimmey said. "We were consistent up and down our lineup, and some young kids stepped up and did the job for us. I thought we had a chance (of winning again), but with a couple of girls out with injuries, I wasn't sure we'd quite have the depth."

Collecting gold for West Bend-Mallard were double individual champions Jessica Abrahamson (discus, 110-08 and shot put, 37-10.5) and Portlind Schmidt (400, 1:04.85 and 1500, 5:21.64), along with Kaley Lempke (100, 13.74), Rachel Wirtz (100 hurdles, 18.74), Kenzie Grimm (200, 27.69), the 4x800 (11:10.19), the 4x200 (1:51.82), the 4x100 (52.71) and 4x400 (4:28.32). The Wolveres also received a runner-up performance from their shuttle hurdle (1:19.36).

Prairie Valley's victories came from Zoe Schneider (high jump, 4-10), Jenny Randleman (16-02), Marlee Walker (400 hurdles, 1:15.14) and the sprint medley (2:04.25). Checking in second for the Warriors were Clara Pearson (long jump, 14-7), Katie Clough (3000, 13:29.31), Randleman (100, 13.79 and 200, 28.17), Schneider (800, 2:46.72) and the distance medley (4:53.29).

"We came out more focused (last night) than were were Friday (at the Roland-Story quadrangular) when we didn't have school. Eide was just short of the school record in the 1500 and ran well in both the distance medley and 800. Lentsch was also solid again in the high jump, and we were able to pick up some more point in the sprint medley, too."

Tiffany Christensen (800, 2:23.31 and 1500, 5:11.35), Stephanie Herrington (3000, 11:55.16) and the 4x800 (Fine Bottner, Hannah Hanson, Herrington and Christensen, 10:35.74).
