To the editor:
I just finished grading over 125 scholarship applications for nine $1,000 grants by Fort Dodge Golden K Kiwanis Club. We have a team of four doing this.
I wish we could reward all of them. They all think they deserve it, but we are limited to the gifts we receive during our Peanut Project May 4 and 5. (We will be at several business places giving out packages of peanuts.)
We have extremes between families with large income and a GPA of 4.0 doing lots of volunteer work in the community, and single moms with income of less than $25,000 where the student has to work to provide for the family. Some have not missed one day of school, and want to take auto mechanics at Iowa Central Community College.
We take all things into consideration. One thing for sure is that we have a lot of brilliant seniors that have great goals. We are happy to give a leg up to some, and wish it could be more.
Note that scholarships are just one of the many projects Fort Dodge Golden K support - locally.
