The message of the pinwheel

April 20, 2012

To the editor:

Prevent Child Abuse Iowa believes that every child deserves a happy childhood - a childhood that includes a loving and nurturing home with opportunities to learn, grow and develop. Most parents want that for their children, but parenting can be a tough job. The stress of parenting can be overwhelming and sometimes lead to frustration, anger and abuse.

The pinwheel has become the new symbol for child abuse prevention. It represents hope for a brighter tomorrow; a future that recognizes the importance of supporting parents in their efforts to raise happy and successful children. The pinwheel represents the joyful and carefree childhood that every child should have.

Help us in joining the Pinwheels for Prevention campaign by doing one of the following such as planting a pinwheel garden, have a pinwheel coloring contest, send pinwheel bouquets to local organizations, give pinwheels to child care providers, sell pinwheels as a fundraiser, hand out pinwheels at a parade, line sidewalks and streets with pinwheels, ask businesses to display pinwheels or plan a "pinwheel picnic."

For more information or to order pinwheels contact Prevent Child Abuse Iowa at www.pcaiowa.org.
