People whose positive actions go far beyond the ordinary warrant particular praise. That's why the Brushy Creek Chapter of the American Red Cross launched in 2010 what has become an annual tribute to area individuals who accomplish the remarkable.
At the third annual Heroes of the Heartland event, held Tuesday at Friendship Haven's Celebration Center, five individuals and an organization were singled out for recognition as area heroes.. Nearly 200 people attended this combination recognition luncheon for the honorees and fundraiser for the Brushy Creek Area Chapter of the American Red Cross.
This year's honorees are:
(Details of each awardee's selfless action were published in a detailed special supplement included in Tuesday's edition of The Messenger.)
At the inaugural Heroes of the Heartland event in 2010, Cori Kuhn-Coleman, who was then chair of the chapter's board of directors, stressed that the individuals honored responded affirmatively to a need for action.
"These ... individuals could have ignored the need," Kuhn-Coleman said. "Instead, they put their needs aside to help the situation."
That strikes us as an excellent definition of a "hero."
Molly Nelson, who served as master of ceremonies for this year's awards ceremony expressed a very similar sentiment that also rings true.
"Each of these ... heroes were faced with the decision to change a life," she said. "Events like this remind us of the goodness of people."
The Messenger congratulates the award recipients and applauds the board and staff of the local Red Cross chapter for sponsoring this excellent awards program.
