Safe celebrations

Officials offer tips to stay secure over holiday

With the Fourth of July week beginning, most people will be celebrating independence and enjoying the company of friends and family.

But while people want to have a good time, law enforcement will be making sure nothing illegal will be happening and everybody stays safe.

Fort Dodge Police Chief Tim Carmody said one goal of his department is to make sure nobody is launching fireworks in town.

It's illegal for fireworks to be used within city limits.

"We take a proactive approach and try to address each case individually within the bounds of the law," he said. "Our primary concern is the safety of our citizens."

Instead of launching fireworks, Carmody said people should go downtown and watch the city's fireworks display.

He also said officers will be on the lookout for drunk drivers.

"Fireworks and alcohol never mix, and you have to make sure you guard against that," he said. "Common sense has to prevail if you want to be safe."

Carmody said those who plan on drinking should have a designated driver and monitor their alcohol intake.

"We are going to do our best to follow up on fireworks complaints as efficiently as we can," he said. "We have to prioritize them with our other calls. We will be out patrolling looking for that and dealing with the situation."

Other law enforcement agencies will also be out making sure everybody stays safe without hurting themselves or others.

Sheriff Brian Mickelson said people should be aware of their cars and how hot it is.

"With as hot as it is, be prepared in case you have car trouble," he said. "Make sure you have what you need to make sure your car is in good working order."

Mickelson added those who are planning on driving should avoid alcohol, and said people should use common sense.

"If everybody uses common sense, everybody will have a good time," he said. "Just take precautions for the weather and have an enjoyable and safe fourth."

For the Iowa State Patrol, Sgt. Wes Niles said nothing out of the ordinary is expected for them.

"We'll be out enforcing the same things we normally do," he said. "It'll be very much the same for us."

Niles said there are specific violations that troopers will be looking for while people are out this weekend.

"We'll just be enforcing our traffic laws, especially with speeding, seatbelts and OWI," he said. "Those are our main focuses this time frame."

Niles also suggested that those who plan on traveling this weekend should "give themselves some extra time to get to their destinations."
