To the editor:
This letter serves to support the wonderful new enterprise in Fort Dodge known as "The Market on Central." Over the past several years community citizens and leaders have sought methods to revitalize the downtown area, create community participation, strengthen rural Iowa values and preserve our local heritage. The Market on Central has been one of those events that has made a very impressive contribution to meeting those goals.
As a recruiter of professionals, mostly physicians, I have found the Market to be a great resource. It has been an invaluable way to introduce potential and committed newcomers to the city and their neighbors. A few weeks ago my wife and I accompanied a new young couple, one a dentist and one a physician, to the Market. They enjoyed the atmosphere and met many people, which will help smooth their transition into the community. We sat for several minutes at one of the picnic tables and during that time we were joined by the mayor, City Council members, other professionals and many kind-hearted community-minded people. Their impression of our community, already positive, was cemented that day.
On a personal note, both my wife and I have enjoyed the Market immensely and can testify to the success by the size of the crowds, number of vendor participants and mostly the number of smiling faces. Community markets are an essential part of our Midwest heritage and symbolic of our agricultural lifestyle. Please help support this worthwhile event.
