DES MOINES - Local Olympian Lisa (Koll) Uhl will be in attendance for a celebration here Saturday honoring Iowans who participated in the London Summer Games.
The 2005 Fort Dodge Senior High graduate joins a star-studded cast of Olympic athletes for 'welcome home' festivities at the Knapp Center. The event, which is open to the public and free of charge, begins at 11 a.m.
Uhl, who placed 13th in the 10,000-meter run with a personal-best time of 31:12.80, will be flanked by gymnastics standouts Gabby Douglas, Shawn Johnson and coach Liang Chow; sprinter Lolo Jones; and wrestler Jake Varner, among others.
Jenny (Barringer) Simpson, a native of Webster City who participated in the women's 1,500-meter run, is also scheduled to make an appearance.
''These men and women competed with honor and represented our country and our state with pride,'' said Jon Wendel, Hy-Vee's executive vice president of marketing in a press release. ''As Iowans, we want to show our appreciation to them for their dedication and achievement.''
Uhl was a four-time national champion and 11-time All-American runner at Iowa State, where she shattered the NCAA record in the women's 10,000.
Doors open at 10 a.m. Saturday for general admission seating. Free public parking is also available around the Knapp Center and in surrounding neighborhoods.
