Backs Planned Parenthood

To the editor:

I think Planned Parenthood is really getting a bad rap in the current presidential campaign. Once again Mitt Romney is not well-informed.

Planned Parenthood is not a government agency. It's support comes from donations and fees that it charges its clients. Government grants do provide 7 percent of the support according to their brochure. They provide many services for families and women ages 13 through 44.

I think Mitt Romney and many others think that all Planned Parenthood does is abortions. Only three cities in Iowa have an abortion clinic. They are Cedar Rapids, Des Moines and Sioux City.

Abortion is not mentioned in the local brochure. If a woman requests an abortion, counseling is available. A family physician would also be recommended for discussion for that event.

Abortion was illegal a few years ago. Women still got an abortion, but not with an attending physician in the U.S. Many mothers and children died, others when to other countries where it was legal.
