MOORLAND - William Charles George Jr., 92, of Moorland, Passed away Monday August 27, 2012 at Tompkins Memorial Health Center.

Funeral services will be held Friday, August 31st at 10:30 a.m. in the Chapel of the Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home with Rev. Shane Deman officiating. Burial will be in Corpus Christi Cemetery with Military Rites presented by the V.F.W. Post 1856. A visitation will be Thursday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Bill is survived by his wife of over 66 years, Joan; sons, John of Davenport; Kenneth (Ann) of Clare; Gary of Manson; daughters Mary Ellen Schultz of Moorland; Annette (Bill) Huse of Milford; 17 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren, and his sister Helen Habben of Duncombe.

He is preceded in death by his parents, William Charles Sr. and Ellen (Crellin) George; brother, Clair George; sisters, Deloris Thompson; Lorraine Holst; Betty Pavolis, and Celia Edwards.

William Charles Jr. was born in Fort Dodge on July 21, 1920. He attended schools in Clare. Following his education Bill enlisted in the U.S. Marines in 1942 and served for three years in the South Pacific. He saw action in Bougainville, Guam, and Guadalcanal. He has two battle stars and the Presidential Citation for helping move ammunition under bombardment at Empress Augusta Bay. He married Joan E. Wempe on February 14, 1946 at Corpus Christi Church. The couple made their home on a farm near Clare. Bill farmed his entire life retiring in 1982. For over 40 years the couple enjoyed traveling south in the winters where he loved to fish in the Rio Grande River in Texas. Bill was a member of the American Legion and the V.F.W. Post 1856.
