DES MOINES - Fort Dodge head girls swim coach Rosie Ellendson had an interesting first road meet Thursday.
On the way to face Des Moines North in a dual, the Dodger bus was involved in an accident. That caused the team to show up late, but Fort Dodge was still able to manage a tie with North, 83-83.
"I'm proud of the girls," Ellendson said. "We were on the side of the road for about an hour and didn't have a lot of time to warm up, but we didn't use that as an excuse.
"We came out and swam really well."
Angie Ellendson picked up first place honors in both the 50 and 100 freestyles. Fort Dodge went 1-2-3 in the 50 free, as Elli Russell was second and Alyssa Nehring finished third.
The Dodgers added seconds from Ashley Graham (500 freestyle), Russell (100 backstroke), Shay Saathoff (100 breaststroke) and Nehring (100 freestyle).
"I was happy with how everything went," Ellendson said. "We are still looking to improve, and I think we are headed in the right direction."
Fort Dodge's 200 medley, 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relays all placed second. Russell, Saathoff, Ellendson and Nehring swam the medley, while Ellendson, Russell, Zoey Miller and Nehring competed on the 200 free.
The 400 free was Miller, Saathoff, Katy Bockey and Graham.
Carrie Gerdes contributed a third in the 100 breaststroke.
The Dodgers return to action Tuesday at Waukee.
