ALBUQUEQUE, N.M. - Thomas Edwin Moreland, age 67, died 9-19-12 of a sudden heart attack while vacationing in Austria with his brother Jim Onnen.
Tom was born December 1, 1944, in Fort Dodge, Iowa. He ws the second son of C. Edwin Moreland and Maebelle E. Miller. His father, a US Air Force fighter pilot in WWII, died three months before Tom was born.
Tom was raised on a farm near Jolley, Iowa by his mother, Maebelle, and her second husband, Harold E. Onnen. After Harold died in 1957, the family moved to Rockwell City. Tom graduated from RCHS in 1963. He was a lifeguard and coached the swim team.
Tom attended the University of Northen Iowa in Cedar Falls where he participated in gymnastics and continued to coach diving. He worked part-time for the Cedar Falls Police Department.
Tom enlistd in the US Army and served two years as an MP in Germany. Tom returned to Cedar Falls and worked full time for their Police Department. He also completed coursework as an EMT.
Tom was the first single person in Iowa to adopt a child. He married Charla Robinson and adopted her three sons as well. The marriage ended in divorce. After retiring from the police force, Tom relocated to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he was living at the time of his death.
Tom recently retired from Home Depot where he helped customers and contractors design kitchens.
Tom is survived by his three brothers and their families: John and Mary Moreland, West Frankfort, Il., Rob and Dianne Onnen, Port Angeles, WA., and Jim Onnen, Rockwell CIty, Iowa.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
