James Mullen was born October 21, 1950, in Sac City, Iowa, to Peter James and Marjorie (Patterson) Mullen. He was baptized and confirmed at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Fonda.
Jim attended school in Fonda, where he graduated from Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic School in 1968. He was very fond of his college years, having attended Loras College, Wayne State, and several others before graduating from Buena Vista College with degrees in History, Journalism, and Personnel and Management. Following graduation, he moved home to the Mullen family farm and started farming with his father and brother, John.
On August 4, 1989, James was united in marriage to Candy Barnhardt at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Fonda. Together, they were blessed with two children: Jean and Joseph. His children were the light of his life. Whether attending his children's various activities or traveling on family vacations, Jim loved spending time with his family. Coming from a large family, Jim cherished all family get-togethers and had an especially close bond with his mother.
Having a thirst for knowledge, Jim enjoyed reading the newspaper and learning of any form. Outspoken, compassionate, and easy-going, Jim was able to start up a conversation with a complete stranger. Anyone that knew Jim could tell you that he was 'quite the character'.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife: Candy Mullen of Fonda, Iowa; children: Jean and Joseph Mullen of Fonda, Iowa; siblings: Teresa (Tom) Meyer of Iowa City, Iowa; Elaine Mullen of West Des Moines, Iowa; Peter (Vicki) Mullen of Sioux City, Iowa; Mary Jo (Fran) Marron of Storm Lake, Iowa; Valerie Walsh of Storm Lake, Iowa; Ronald (Carol) Mullen of Wellman, Iowa; Mark (Lori) Mullen of Pella, Iowa; 20 nieces and nephews; numerous great nieces and nephews; extended family and many friends. James was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Marjorie; sister, Jeanne Mullen; brother, John Mullen; brother-in-law, Larry Walsh; nephew, Jason Walsh; and mother-in-law, Leveta Barnhardt.
James will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
