COUNCIL BLUFFS - The Iowa Central football team ran into a buzzsaw here on Saturday in the form of top-ranked Iowa Western.
The Tritons (5-3 overall, 0-3 MFC) suffered their worst loss in school history, dropping a 73-7 decision to unbeaten Reivers (8-0, 3-0).
"It wasn't much fun, that's for sure,'' said Iowa Central head coach Kevin Twait. "They're very deserving of their No. 1 ranking. They are exceptionally hard to defend and have tremendous athleticism.
"The (Jake) Waters kid (at quarterback) is getting major Div. I scholarship offers. But the talent is everywhere.''
The Tritons moved the ball on the ground in the first half, getting inside the 20 twice, but could never punch it in. They failed to convert on two 4th and 1s.
"It wouldn't have been quite so lopsided had we exexcuted a little more, but we got hit in the mouth and didn't respond well.
"We didn't need to help them out.''
Ron Thompson had the lone score for the Tritons on a one-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.
The Tritons will host North Dakota Science on Saturday inside Dodger Stadium at 1 p.m.
"We need to put this one behind us in a hurry,'' Twait said. "The sophomores have their last home game on Saturday against North Dakota Science. The winner will play Ellsworth for the chance at a bowl game. The looser has to come back here.
"We know who we'd rather face. Ellsworth is a terrific ballclub, but Iowa Western is just on a different level. We have a chance to finish a 6-3 regular season on our home turf. That is the focus now."
