SPENCER - Algona's Tangy Wiseman and Humboldt's Sam Larson both stepped up to the challenge Monday night, qualifying individually for the Class 3A girls state cross country meet.

As a team, the Bulldogs finished in a dead heat with No. 11 Spencer for third with 126 points, but failed to move on after losing the tiebreaker to the Tigers on a controversial ruling.

Algona was originally awarded third and a trip to state, but further review of the tape showed two LeMars runners were misidentified, allowing Spencer the extra two points it needed to eventually advance.

No. 10 MOC-Floyd Valley (46) and second-ranked Sioux City Heelan (60) led the field. Webster City (227) checked in ninth, while Humboldt (238) was 10th.

Wiseman, a 27th-ranked junior, took home individual bronze for the Bulldogs in a time of 15:21.22. Other Algona counters were Paige Yi (11th, 16:16.08), Carissa Pityer (21st, 16:46.02), Anna Zeller (38th, 17:24.79) and Kyle Klepper (49th, 17:42.73).

MOC-Floyd Valley's eighth-ranked Bethany Dykstra (14:35.48) and Kenzie Theisen (14:45.75) of LeMars were first and second.

On the boys side, second-ranked Sioux City Heelan (50), Spencer (102) and Garner-Hayfield/Ventura/West Hancock (109) all advanced.

Algona (124) finished fifth. Webster City (145) placed eighth and Humboldt (173) was ninth.

Running for the Bulldogs were Adam Poeppe (15th, 17:37.28), Loren Shellabarger (19th, 17:52.29), Peter Hollinger (27th, 18:09.70), Nathan Stumme (30th, 18:14.83) and David Shellabarger (33rd, 18:25.76).

The Lynx were represented by Ethan Glenn (16th, 17:41.40), Steven Smith (18th, 17:50.58), Jacob Clabaugh (20th, 17:54.47), Nick Thilges (45th, 18:46.07) and Ryan Henrichs (46th, 28:46.54).
