HARCOURT - Weekday customer service hours at the Harcourt Post Office may be cut in half next year, a postal service official reported Thursday.

However, Saturday hours will remain unchanged and the lobby where the mailboxes are will continue to be open 24 hours a day, according to Rory Sullivan, the manager of post office operations for all post offices that have a zip code beginning with 505.

The customer service counter at the Harcourt Post Office is now open on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. and from noon to 3:45 p.m.

Sullivan said the new schedule, which hasn't been finalized yet, may be noon to 4 p.m.

On Saturdays the customer service counter is open from noon to 1:45 p.m. That will remain unchanged, Sullivan said.

The new hours may go into effect in January, he said.

Sullivan explained the proposed change to about eight people at a meeting at the post office Thursday evening.

"We're trying to match work hours to work load," he said.

None of the residents at the meeting expressed an opinion on the proposal.

One person asked if the Postal Service would consider installing a locker that would enable people to pick up packages even when the customer service counter is closed. Sullivan said that it would. He said that when a Harcourt resident receives a package, a note and a key to the locker will be placed in their mailbox.
