Appreciates the support

To the editor:

As the Village General Store, 12 N. 25th St., notes its one-year anniversary Oct. 28, I would like to thank the greater Fort Dodge community for its support.

The Village Store provides quality used clothing and household goods to the community at low prices with proceeds providing needed revenue for Opportunity Village services to local people with disabilities. The store also provides jobs and job training to people with disabilities.

The community has generously responded by donating their gently used clothes and household items, shopping and volunteering at the store. Volunteers helped set up the store before it even opened. They sort, price and display merchandise, assist people at the donation door, test and repair small appliances, mow, pull weeds, and serve as cashier. One volunteer even got the office area furnace working last winter so I didn't have to work in 50-degree temperatures.

The Village General Store has a great crew of volunteers who give their time, talent and energy to support Village services. They enjoy a fun camaraderie, working and joking together with the store's three full-time staff. Our volunteers are vital to the Village Store; without them, the store could not exist.

Today, Opportunity Village has significant concerns about the security of its funding. Funders are pulling back from what they will support through the traditional fee for services. Our volunteers are a critical asset that allows the Village to provide more than minimum care. For a non-profit agency whose mission commits to excellence in service to individuals, that's extremely important.

More volunteers are needed to join those who serve as the backbone of the Village General Store. Opportunities are available to volunteer one or more shifts a week, a month or on an occasional basis for individuals, a couple of friends, a family group or representatives of a club or business. If you would like to volunteer or get more information, please contact me at or 573-4046.

The Village General Store looks forward to another great year of service to the greater Fort Dodge community with its support.
