To the editor:
Too much has been talked about regarding what Steve King has said. Everyone misspeaks every now and again. No one speaks perfectly all the time, and it is not very fair to judge King solely on his misstatements. There is no question that King loves Iowa, his wife, his children and his church and believes he can represent what is best for them, and us.
Instead of judging King on his rhetoric, let us look at his voting record instead. King's votes for the Ryan budget can at least be explained by his commitment to fiscal responsibility. His record shows a disregard for our pets, though. He has obscurely voted against modest animal welfare reforms and common sense legislation that would protect animals. He even voted against legislation that would ban taking children to illegal dog fighting events.
Steve King spent the last 10 years pushing his national agenda and stubbornly standing his ground. Iowa has reached a fork in the road. We can go back to the last century or we can move on to the next one. It is time to choose the latter, thank Steve King for his service, and send Christie Vilsack to Congress.
