Triton women win

November 6, 2012
By JOSH MEYER sports@messengernews.net

Few style points were needed by the Iowa Central women's basketball team Tuesday night.

Despite a sluggish offensive performance, the Tritons (1-1 overall) still managed to earn their first victory of the young season, downing Grand View JV inside Hodges Fieldhouse, 59-46.

Iowa Central shot just 19 of 58 (32.8 percent) from the field and committed 30 turnovers - with 19 of those coming in the first half.

"Once we start to value the basketball, I think we'll be OK," said ICCC head coach Craig Carlson, who collected his 177th victory at the helm Tuesday. "I've never had a team with so many turnovers in one half, but we have good kids that continue to work hard on the defensive end.

"With 11 freshmen on the team this year, we knew it was going to be a process."

Freshman reserve Katie Dentlinger, a 5-foot-11 forward, powered the Tritons with a game-high 19 points and six rebounds.

Miliakere Koyamainavure, another newcomer, also netted 17 points and grabbed six boards off the bench for Iowa Central, which outscored the Vikings 36-23 after the break.

"Dentlinger did exactly what we thought she could do (last evening)," said Carlson. "Miliakere stepped up as well and made some big shots for us when we needed them."

Following a see-saw opening half that featured a combined 14 ties and lead changes, the Tritons pulled away down the stretch behind three consecutive Koyamainavure triples in a span of less than two minutes. Iowa Central, which received only eight points from its starting five, finished the contest 7-for-29 from behind the arc and outrebounded the visitors, 38-28.

"We weren't real patient at times offensively, but bad shots are better than no shots," Carlson said. "At least we were getting some (scoring) opportunities instead of just throwing away possessions."

St. Edmond graduate Lydia Harvey delivered five steals for the Tritons, while Babaye Oja added four.

Erin Uhlmeyer (14) and Anna Sweeting (13) each reached double digits in scoring for Grand View JV (1-2), which connected on only 13 of 45 (28.9 percent) attempts from the floor. The Vikings registered 17 of their 31 turnovers in the final frame.

Next action for Iowa Central is Friday when they battle No. 4 (NJCAA Div. II) Kishwaukee in the Kirkwood Classic. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m. in Cedar Rapids.
