SAC CITY - Skeletal remains that were found buried in the basement of a Sac City home earlier this week have been identified as the home's former owner.
The body of Mark Koster was identified through dental records, according to a statement from Sac City Police Chief John Thomsen.
Police say more autopsy results might take up to 6 to 8 weeks.
Koster's body was discovered on Monday during a basement renovation at 610 N. Fifth St. in Sac City.
"Due to the suspicious circumstance of the location of where Mr. Koster's remains were found, this case is currently under investigation," Thomsen wrote in the statement.
Koster was 58 years old when he was last seen in May 2009, according to Sac City Police. His family reported him missing in 2010, and he was legally declared dead in October 2011.
According to police, an unidentified man had been staying with Koster for about three months before he disappeared.
At the time of Koster's disappearance, police searched his home but didn't find any signs of foul play.
The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is assisting Sac City police with the investigation.
Anybody with information on this case, or anybody who might know who Koster's roommate was, is asked to call the Sac City Police Department at (712) 662-7772.
