To the editor:

On the behalf of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1856 and all veterans in the greater Fort Dodge area, we would like to thank the businesses that provided free meals to veterans in honor of Veterans Day 2012: Applebee's, Hy-Vee, and Perkins. The recognition, kindness, and thankful words were appreciated as much as the delicious food.

Thank you to McGough Construction which used their crane and equipment to fly a very large flag high over the VFW post during the weekend. The wind allowed the flag to wave proudly, which was observed by all who drove or walked anywhere in the vicinity.

Thank you to all the veterans and supporters who attended and participated in the Veterans Day ceremony at St. Edmond High School on Sunday. There was a good turnout, especially considering the drastic change in the weather , and as always it was an excellent patriotic program.

Finally, thank you to everyone who attended the bean soup and cornbread lunch at the VFW post following the program, and thank you to those who prepared the meal. It was unanimously agreed that it was the best bean soup ever made. If you have not attended the annual Veterans Day program followed by the VFW bean soup lunch in the past, please make it a point to attend next year.

To everyone who did anything at all to make Veterans Day special, please know that all area veterans, although having served selflessly and with no expectation of reward, greatly appreciate your ongoing support!

Ron Arends, Commander

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1856
