An early morning assault that left two men seriously injured has Fort Dodge police looking for answers.

Around 3:13 a.m. Friday, officers were sent to 1428 Eighth Ave. S. after someone called and said a man was lying in the front yard there, according to Fort Dodge Police Chief Tim Carmody.

When officers arrived, they found Matthew Ebner, 51, of Fort Dodge, shirtless and face down on the sidewalk. They examined Ebner and found injuries to both his head and torso.

The officers' investigation led them to 1414 Eighth Ave. S. where they found Walter Wachter, 54, of Fort Dodge, semiconscious. Carmody said Wachter had injuries to both his face and head.

Ebner and Wachter were both taken by ambulance to Trinity Regional Medical Center, but were later airlifted to other Iowa hospitals because of the extent of the injuries, according to Carmody.

The location of those hospitals was not disclosed by police.

The injured men's conditions were not available Friday.

Carmody said the investigation is still in its early stages.

Investigators are looking for information about the assault, he said. They are interested in talking to anyone who may have witnessed the incidents.

Anyone with information on the assault on Ebner and Wachter is asked to call the Fort Dodge Police Department at 573-1426 or Crime Stoppers at 573-1444. Tips can also be emailed online at wccrimestoppers.com or by texting "LEC" and the tip to 274637.
