To the editor:
After retiring from nursing, I started volunteering at The Salvation Army.
I soon realized, that a health issue, loss of a job or a major hurdle in life can cause a person to become dependent on compassion and generosity of others.
Filling a food box for a family of five, I reached the peanut butter shelf and it was empty.
I had a thought. If 50 people bought one jar of peanut butter, many kids could enjoy a peanut butter sandwich after school.
When I got to the soup shelf, there were five cans left. I had a thought. If 50 people bought four cans of soup, that would be 200 cans - WOW.
Stopping at Fareway on the way home I heard a bell ringing. I had a thought. If we all had some quarters in our pockets, we could drop a quarter or two in the kettle when we hear the bell. Then, smile and say, " Thank you for ringing the bell."
The smile would be priceless. Merry Christmas, happy new year and thank you.
