Tritons fall to Southeastern

The Iowa Central men's basketball team finds themselves in an early-season slump.

Following a tough overtime setback last Wednesday to Dakota County, the Tritons were unable to settle into any kind of groove on offense Monday night, falling to Southeastern 57-47 inside Hodges Fieldhouse.

Getting back home did not help Iowa Central (5-4 overall), as they shot just 37 percent from the field, including 6-for-24 in the opening 20 minutes. The Blackhawks (8-1) weren't much better at 36 percent, but they turned 16 Triton turnovers into 13 points.

"Shooting and points off turnovers: those two things were the difference right there," ICCC head coach Dennis Pilcher said. "I thought defensively we played a pretty strong game, holding them to just 57 points, but you can't turn the ball over that much, you can't allow that many easy baskets (off turnovers) and you can't miss that many open shots and expect to win.

"We're in a bit of a rut right now, and we need to figure out how to get out of it."

Southeastern closed the first half strong, putting together a 13-3 run to hold a 31-17 advantage. Warren Jones scored a game-high 14 points, while Jordan Stevens added 13. The Blackhawks swiped 14 steals and held a plus-five advantage on the glass.

Iowa Central's Deion Isham led the way with 13 points, Jawad Adekoya added 12 and Rhys Elliot finished with nine. The trio combined for 23 in the second half of action, including the brunt of the damage during an 11-0 run put on by the Tritons in the second.

After cutting the deficit to 39-32, the Blackhawks went back to Jones and Stevens, icing the game away with a 12-2 burst of their own.

"We didn't show any sense of vision out on the court," Pilcher said. "In basketball, if you don't have vision, you are going to struggle to run the offense. We need to improve our vision and gain a better basketball-sense on floor."

Southeastern is coached by former Fort Dodge Senior High head coach Terry Carroll and assisted by Eagle Grove graduate and ex-Iowa Central player and coach Ryan O'Hern. Carroll was the FDSH coach from 1981-84, along with stints at Iowa State University as an assistant and the University of Denver as the head coach.

The Tritons return to action on Thursday when they travel to Des Moines to meet the Grand View JV. Tip is set for 7 p.m.
