Melvin L. Porter, 76, of Fort Dodge, passed away Monday, December 3, 2012 at the Paula J. Baber Hospice Home after a long battle with cancer. Mr. Porter's wishes were to be cremated and a private service with full military honors will be held for him. The Gunderson Funeral Home and Cremation Services are in charge of arrangements.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years LaVonne; children, Kimberly (Mark) Bacon, Kerry Porter (Jennifer), and Scott Porter (Lindy); six grandchildren, Chelsea, Chad Bacon; Ryan, Caleb Porter; Kyle, Kasey Porter; brothers, Bill and Jack and a sister, Helen. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Ray, Chuck and Jerry and a sister, Shirley.
Melvin Leroy Porter, the son of John and Gertrude (Frahm) Porter, was born July 28, 1936 in Fort Dodge, Iowa. On February 3, 1956, Melvin married LaVonne Swanberg in Fort Dodge. In November of 1958, he was drafted into the United States Army and served in Germany for two years. After his discharge, Mel worked for Gus Glaser Meats for 15 years and later retired for the Webster County.

Mel enjoyed NASCAR, and loved to go fishing for Walleyes down at the river with his friend Don Woodman.
