Gael girls roll

December 15, 2012
By ERIC PRATT sports@messengernews.net

A perfect start was more than enough for the St. Edmond girls basketball team here Saturday night.

The Gaels used a 15-0 spurt right out of the gates to build the foundation for what wound up being a 64-38 non-conference win over South Hamilton.

Sophomore guard Jaci Stumpf led three SEHS players in double figures with 16 points, while the Gael defense forced 37 turnovers and registered 19 steals.

''We got on a roll and were crisp at the start,'' Gael head coach Scott Messerly said. ''After that it wasn't exactly a work of art, but a lot of credit has to go to (the Hawks) for staying after it and not giving up.

''We had a 3-0 week, which was good to see with the winter break coming up. I saw some tired legs a little down the stretch (Saturday); we were dragging. But it's nice to be 7-1.''

Senior center Hannah Lentsch added 13 points and junior Alli Huss finished with 10. St. Edmond made nine of its first 10 shots from the floor and went up by as many as 18 in the first half before a four-minute scoreless spell late in the second period allowed South Hamilton to finally chip away at the deficit.

The Gaels received a 16-point combined effort from their reserves, which helped compensate for an 8-for-19 team effort at the charity stripe.

''Our bench came in and did a good job,'' Messerly said. ''Jaci had a nice floor game and we got our posts good looks underneath.

''Our press gave them problems, which was a credit to our defensive intensity at times. We tried working on some things and maybe got a little off our gameplan and relaxed a bit too much after the big start.''

Senior Ella Jans paced the Hawks with 11 points - all in the second half.

South Hamilton eliminated the Gaels from Class 2A district competition a year ago, but only one starter was returning this season.

St. Edmond is back in action on Tuesday, welcoming Webster City to the Gael gym for a 6:15 p.m. tip. The final contest before break will be at Iowa Falls-Alden on Friday.
