Some owners of businesses along the Fifth Avenue South corridor have decided to wait a little longer before asking the Fort Dodge City Council to create a new Self-Supported Municipal Improvement District for their area.
The council was scheduled to formally receive the petitions requesting the new district when it met Monday evening. However, the committee organizing the effort met Monday morning and decided to wait until some more petitions are received, according to Angela Torres, the associate city planner.
''I would anticipate they will continue working,'' she told the council. ''They're just waiting for additional petitions to be turned in.''
She didn't say when she expects the proposal to be returned to the council.
A Self-Supported Municipal Improvement District is an area in which property owners pay an extra tax to finance improvements there. Fort Dodge already has such a district downtown.
The proposed district would extend along Fifth Avenue South from about 21st Street to the eastern city limits.
Depending on their location in the district, property owners would pay an extra tax of either 75 cents per $1,000 of taxable value or 30 cents per $1,000 of taxable value.
With the Self-Supported Municipal Improvement District matter removed from the agenda, council members had only one other item to act on during a business meeting that lasted about 10 minutes. That action item consisted of accepting and placing on file a police civil service list. The list is based on a Dec. 17 exam open only to those who are already certified police officers. These three people are on the list: Rolfe Police Chief Donald Westering, Trevir Michehl and Christopher Larson.
Councilmen Andy Fritz and Robert ''Barney'' Patterson were absent from the otherwise unanimous vote to accept the list.
In another city personnel matter, Scott Meinders, a civil engineer, will become the Winnebago County engineer on Feb. 4. Friday will be his last day on the job in Fort Dodge.
