Triton men roll

January 9, 2013
By DANA BECKER sports@messengernews.net

Dennis Pilcher summed up Iowa Central's 98-72 victory over North Iowa Area Wednesday night with one word.

"Frustrating," said Pilcher, as the Tritons earned their first ICCAC win of the season. "(NIACC) makes you play their hectic style, and we did that quite a bit. Fortunately, we were able to remain calm through enough stretches to pick up the victory."

Iowa Central (10-7 overall, 1-2 in ICCAC) posted 51 points in the opening 20 minutes, as the Trojans (11-5, 0-2) did their best to impose a frenetic pace.

Rhys Elliot led six players in double figures with 24, while Jesse Jones added 21. David Andersen scored 14 off the bench, while Jawad Adekoya had 12, and both Jaleel Gray and Casey Sieren scored 10. As a collective unit, the Tritons shot 36 of 52 from the field, including 20-for-32 in the first half.

"I thought getting a lead right out of the gates was critical because we forced them to play from behind," Pilcher said. "Even when we pushed the lead to 20-plus, I never felt comfortable because (NIACC) can quickly make a run on you."

NIACC, which is receiving votes in the latest poll and was ranked as high as the top-five earlier in the year, never again after claiming an early 7-3 advantage. The Tritons went on a 17-5 run and never looked back, pushing their lead to as many as 23 following another 17-3 burst.
