Registration for Winter Preschool Storytime at the Fort Dodge Public Library begins Thursday.
The free program is for children ages 3 to 6, and provides a fun way to get ready for school, said children's librarian Laurie Hotz.
"For many children this is their first step towards reading, toward learning some of those early literacy skills," said Hotz. "We start with finger plays, we start with letter recognition, learning the different sounds words make."
Storytimes are held Wednesdays and Thursdays beginning Jan. 23 and continuing six weeks into the end of February. Times are 10 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesdays; 10 to 10:30 a.m. and 2 to 2:30 p.m. Thursdays.
Parents can call the library to sign up at 573-8167, ext. 242, or register in person. The library is located at 424 Central Ave.
Hotz said she's been pushing the aspect of learning to read since last fall's storytime, and she's impressed by the results.
"It's amazing how the kids remember that from week to week," she said. "I only have them for a half hour each week, but we'll do a little review each week, and they'll remember. Like they'll know we did the letter E last week, and the sound it made, or the letter S the week before.
"It's been a lot of fun and hopefully, as they get to kindergarten, the teachers will notice that they have already started learning some of those basic principles."
