Dodger boys lose to No. 10 Valley

Fort Dodge's enigmatic ways continued here on Tuesday night.

In a fourth attempt to start a winning streak this season, the Dodgers again came up woefully short as No. 10 (Class 4A) West Des Moines Valley cruised to a 66-30 victory.

The Tigers (11-3 overall) scored the final 16 points of the first half to pull away from Fort Dodge, which won big at Johnston 24 hours earlier. Head coach Tom Daniel's squad is now 0-4 following victories this year, with losses by a combined 102 points.

''We were just dominated,'' Daniel said. ''They shot us out of our zone early (the Tigers hit eight three-pointers in the first half) and pounded us on the glass.

''It was not a good night. For whatever reason, we've played our worst games of the season immediately after wins. We just haven't been able to sustain any level of consistency. I don't want to take anything away from Valley - they're a really good ballclub with a lot of weapons - but we didn't show much of anything and that's disappointing.

''I'm not going to spend a lot of time on this game film, that's for sure. We need to flush this performance out of our system and get ready for Marshalltown.''

University of Iowa recruit Peter Jok had 16 points in limited minutes for Valley, which has taken eight of nine overall following a 3-2 start. Clint Boffeli (11 points) and reserve D.J. Dafney (10) also reached double figures for the Tigers, who are coached by former all-Big Ten Hawkeye guard Jeff Horner.

Horner's bench assistants include ex-St. Edmond all-stater Jack Brownlee and J.R. Angle. Both are former Hawkeyes as well.

Junior JC Hatcher led the Dodgers (4-9) with 11 points. Fort Dodge shot just 28 percent from the field and made only one three-point basket in 11 tries.

''We were going through the motions,'' Daniel said. ''I know we played on Monday and I suppose fatigue played a little bit of a factor, but that's not an excuse for some of the ridiculous mental mistakes we made and how intimidated we seemed to be.

''At this point in the season, you want to feel like you're making progress every time out. It's like every time we get to that point, we take a step back. So now we have to circle the wagons again by Friday and try to get some momentum down the stretch of the year.''

Fort Dodge faces the Bobcats (5-10) at 7:45 p.m. on Friday.
