More than 50 Fort Dodge Senior High Jazz Band students participated in the Iowa High School Music Association Jazz Band Festival on Jan. 26 at Cherokee-Washington High School in Cherokee.
The Jazz Lab earned its 10th consecutive Division One rating at the festival by receiving three straight I's from adjudicators. Jazz Lab performed "Flight of the Foo Bird" by Neil Hefti, with solos by Kelsey Albrecht on alto sax, Ian Brown on tenor sax and Nick Swanson on trumpet; "True North" by Mike Dana, with Albrecht on alto sax; and "Samba Ti Kaye" by Mark Taylor. with solos by Keegan Gormally on trombone, Jennifer Eger on trumpet and Alex Jackson on drum set.
The Jazz Ensemble performed "Jazzmanian Devil" by Mike Story, with soloist Mariah Crouse on trumpet; "My Funny Valentine" arranged by Michael Sweeney, with Crouse on trumpet; and "Work Song" arranged by Mike Dana. with soloists Nicole Cook on flute and Jayde Fitzgerald on alto sax.
Following each performance, both bands had a 30-minute clinic with Iowa jazz educators Steve Lawson, from Harlan, and Larry Kisor, from Sioux City.
The Jazz Lab and Jazz Ensemble are both under the direction of Mike Richardson.
